Leaving Korea Guide
Leaving Korea: How to Cancel Your KT Phone Plan
Short answer: Cancel your KT line 5–10 business days before departure. Settle remaining device installments either by lump-sum payment or line transfer to another foreigner. Final bill arrives 1–2 cycles later and is charged to the card on file.
Why this is harder than it sounds
Cancelling a Korean phone plan from abroad is the single most painful part of leaving Korea for many expats. KT customer service is Korean-first, the My KT app requires Korean identity verification, and the final billing cycle can hit your card weeks after you have already moved. This guide is the English playbook our team gives every E-2 teacher, D-2 student, and short-term professional who is on the way out.
Step 1 — Decide between cancellation and transfer
If your contract is partially used or you have remaining device installments, you have two options. (1) Cancel and settle: pay any pro-rated penalty plus remaining installment in one bill. (2) Line transfer (명의이전): pass the line and the remaining installment to another eligible foreigner. Often cheaper than cancellation if you have 12+ months left.
Step 2 — Calculate the real cost
The penalty depends on which discount you originally took. Plan discount (선택약정 25%) reclaims the discount you already received pro rata. Common subsidy (공시지원금) has the highest penalty in the first 6 months and decreases after. After 18 months on a 24-month contract, common-subsidy penalties are typically waived. We can run the exact number in English before you commit.
Step 3 — Settle the final bill
KT bills monthly cycles in arrears. Even after cancellation, expect one final partial-cycle invoice plus any settlement amount. Make sure the credit card on file is still valid for at least 60 days after departure, or pre-pay a lump sum at the My KT counter or app before you leave.
Step 4 — Avoid the post-departure trap
Many foreigners discover months later that small recurring charges (insurance, content subscription, additional services) continued past their cancellation date. Before you leave, list every line item on your KT bill, and explicitly cancel each one — not just the main line.
Frequently asked questions
How early should I cancel my KT phone before leaving Korea?
Aim to start the cancellation process 5 to 10 business days before your departure. This gives KT time to verify identity, settle the final billing cycle, and confirm any remaining device installment balance.
Will I owe a penalty if I cancel before the contract ends?
It depends on your discount type and how long you have used the line. Plan-discount (선택약정) contracts pro-rate the 25% discount you received as a partial penalty. Common-subsidy (공시지원금) contracts have higher penalties before 6 months and reduced ones after. We confirm the exact amount in English before you cancel.
Do I need to pay off my phone installment in full when I leave?
You have two options: pay the remaining device balance in one lump sum, or transfer the line and the installment to another foreigner who is eligible (line transfer / 명의이전). Both are common for departing E-2 teachers and D-2 students.
Can I keep my Korean number after leaving?
KT does not officially port a Korean number to a foreign carrier, but some users keep their number active on a low-cost MVNO plan paid from abroad. This works only if you have an autopay-capable Korean card or bank account remaining open.
What documents do I need to cancel from inside Korea?
Your ARC, the phone (for IMEI verification), the original credit card used for billing, and proof of departure (e-ticket or visa cancellation slip). For online cancellation, the same identity verification methods used at signup apply.
Can I cancel my KT line after I have already left Korea?
Yes, but it is more complicated. You will need to call KT customer support (1588-0010) or use the My KT app with your ARC and Korean phone number for verification. We strongly recommend cancelling before departure if possible.
